Brixham in the off-season

Things to Do in Brixham in the Off-Season

Brixham, the colourful fishing town tucked along Devon’s south coast, is a favourite spot for summer holidaymakers. But when the crowds thin out and the harbour quietens, the town reveals a slower charm.

If you’re planning a winter or early-spring break, here are the top things to do in Brixham during the off-season, when you can explore at your own pace and book experiences without the summer scramble.

Explore the Brixham Fish Market Tour

As one of the UK’s busiest and most valuable fishing ports, Brixham offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the industry through its early-morning Fish Market Tour. Peak season tours fill quickly, but off-season visitors have a much better chance of securing a spot.

You’ll witness the live fish auction, learn about the day’s catch, and enjoy a fresh seafood breakfast at Rockfish. Note that children under 14 and wheelchairs cannot be accommodated on the tour.

For seafood fans or anyone curious about Britain’s fishing heritage, it’s an unmissable experience!

Browse Local Art Galleries and Boutiques

With quieter streets, the off-season is the perfect time to explore Brixham’s independent galleries, studios, and boutique shops at your leisure.

The Strand Art Gallery showcases a striking collection of coastal artwork, including evocative pieces by Jane Burt and dramatic seascapes by David Chambers.

Colours of Brixham Gallery run by three sisters, Janet Bolland, Elaine Cavicchia, Lynne Peets and their ‘adopted sister,’ Vivienne Bryant. As well as their own amazing art, they showcase work from talented artists such as Linda Wevill, known for her atmospheric landscapes. Also, Peter Archer, whose bold, colourful depictions of coastal life capture the spirit of Brixham.

The gallery offers something for every art lover. Its diverse collection includes paintings, ceramics, and prints, reflecting the creativity and charm of this picturesque seaside community.

Keep an eye out, too, for local illustrator Stella Isaac, known for her charming maps and greeting cards. You’ll often find her work at the Sunday Harbour Market or in shops like The Nook!

Step Aboard the Golden Hind

The Golden Hind, a full-size replica of Sir Francis Drake’s legendary galleon, is one of Brixham’s most iconic attractions. While it’s usually buzzing with visitors in high season, winter brings a wonderfully calm atmosphere. Opening again for the February half-term, it’s the perfect time to admire the intricate details, dive into maritime history, and enjoy the exhibits without rushing.

With tickets between £5–£7, it’s a great-value experience. And don’t forget to snap a photo of the harbour from the deck, the views are even better without the crowds!
